Cleanup Safety Tips

Litter picking is a great way to get exercise in the great outdoors, meet your neighbors, and do something good for our community. Please follow these safety tips if you venture out:
  •  If you include children, make sure they are CLOSELY supervised.
  • Stay on the sidewalk and clean in the direction of traffic, so you can see what is approaching you. Don't wander out in the street to grab a piece of litter.
  • Clean one side of the street first, then cross the street at a crosswalk to clean the other side of the street.
  • To avoid touching trash, use work gloves, a trash grabber tool or even a set of old kitchen tongs.
  • Hose down gloves and tools and/or disinfect after each use.
  • Wear brightly colored clothing or a safety vest. 
  • Don't lift anything heavy. Use a rolling cart so that you don't have to carry a heavy bag.
  • If you find a needle, syringe, drug paraphernalia, biological waste (such as dirty diapers) DO NOT TOUCH. Contact 311 to report it.
