Did you know?
- Fowl Meadow was designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) by the state in 1992. An ACEC is a place that receives special recognition and protection because the natural, recreational, and cultural resources found there are of statewide importance.
- Fowl Meadow is part of the Neponset River Watershed, and the water recharges numerous wells that provide drinking water for 64,000 people who live in Canton, Dedham, and Westwood.
- The area is one of the most important wildlife habitats in Greater Boston and is used by dozens of species of birds, mammals, amphibians, and fish - from great blue herons to river otters - including numerous threatened or endangered species.
- Fowl Meadow serves as a vital flood control barrier along the Neponset River. After heavy rains, the wetlands soak up excess water and then release it slowly over the course of several weeks – preventing property damage in Hyde Park and Dorchester.
- Dumping/littering of any kind can contaminate the water supply, pollute the Neponset River, introduce invasive species, endanger wildlife, and ruin the natural beauty enjoyed by the community.
- The fine for dumping in a wetland like Fowl Meadow is up to $25,000 per day.
- Contact the Neponset River Watershed Association (NepRWA) for more information about the meadow. https://www.neponset.org/
